#WineWednesday – A weekly column about what keeps me busy in the wine world. This time, I realize I do have a favorite wine, even though I always say I don't.
Last week, I spent a week's holiday in Burgundy with honorary club member Hanneke. No fancy chateau-style dining, just six days at a campsite. Peace, cleanliness, and regularity were key. We found a quiet campsite in Nolay, a village in the heart of the Côte d'Or. It was obvious that a glass of Meursault was a must.
And so it happened. I went to Meursault to ask for a 'recommendation for this matter' to ask, because although I had already thought about this ultimate combination (Campinglife + Meursault) for weeks in advance, I hadn't yet delved into which house and which vineyard I should choose. I'll do that next time. For now, I'll rely on the advice of the moderately enthusiastic wine saleswoman. It was Domaine Prieur-Brunet Meursault Charmes Premier Cru 2014 . The wine tasted exactly as I had imagined:
"A small pan on the stove, gently melting a knob of butter. Then add a slice of white bread. Brown it slowly on both sides, then spread it with butter and apricot jam."
Yes, that's what Meursault smells and tastes like.
I'm often asked if I have a favorite wine. No, I say, because it depends on the moment, the weather, my mood, and so many other things. But here at the campsite, I realize that if I really had to choose from all the wines of the world, I'd choose Meursault. The aroma alone makes me happy. Just like that oily texture. It's a wine you want more of, but at the same time, one glass is enough. It gets even better when paired with a creamy dish, like chicken in cream sauce. Or lobster, but that didn't seem feasible in my camping pan...
