Think big. I want to become a Weinakademiker. On September 3, 2018, I started the WSET Diploma Course, which ultimately—if you add a thesis afterward—results in the title of Weinakademiker. In part 10, I look back on the past year.

On September 10, 2018, I wrote part 1 of this series. Two years and two lockdowns later, I can tell you I'm almost finished. The big exam, the D3 Wines of the World, is in the bag. What a huge relief.

The questions that were offered may not be shared, but in the previous article I've made up a few so you can get an idea of the kind of questions being asked. You'll also find study tips here.

Passed?

Almost. I'd put off the CWA (D6) until the last minute. It's a 3,000-word paper on an assigned topic. I'd skipped it because it was about rum, and I really didn't feel like it. In early January, I finally managed to muster the motivation and wrote a few thousand words about Australian export history. Sounds boring, but it ended up being quite enjoyable.

Update: I passed the CWA!

Current score

The work is done. With a bit of luck, we can return to London soon for the ceremony...

Wine academy

Now I can add the title DipWSET after my name. Nice, but "Weinakademiker" sounds better, right? So this series isn't over yet. The title "Weinakademiker" comes from the Wine Academy in Austria, and to earn it, you have to write a thesis. That will be the next challenge.

Bring it on!
